What it's like
Akasha sits high in the village of Peștera, in the hills of Transylvania, at more than 1,000 meters above sea level. From the terrace you look across to Piatra Craiului National Park, a long limestone ridge with a huge area of protected wilderness behind it. Bran, home of the castle often linked to the Dracula legend, is about a 15-minute drive away.
It's a small place. The main retreat has 11 rooms, each refurbished in its own style with natural materials. There's an indoor yoga studio, a home-style gym, a traditional sauna and a heated outdoor jacuzzi, and massage therapists are on hand. The team also runs Villa Alba, a six-room house in Predeluț, near Bran, which works well for private stays and groups.

The programs
- Daily yoga. One 60-minute class a day, in the morning or early evening, taught in English. Styles rotate between Hatha, Yin, pranayama, sound healing and meditation, with teachers rooted mainly in the Sivananda tradition. It isn't a medical or intensive detox center, and there's just one yoga class a day, so dedicated practitioners wanting several sessions daily may find it light. If you want big-resort amenities, this isn't the place.
