Amuna is an Ayurveda and wellness retreat in the countryside near Sigiriya and Dambulla, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. It suits people who want a proper doctor-guided Ayurveda program of a week or more, as well as anyone after a gentler yoga and rest break.
What it's like
Amuna sits in the green countryside at Kimbissa, close to Sigiriya and Dambulla, in the middle of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. The buildings lean on natural materials and a village-style look, so it feels rooted in the landscape rather than dropped into it. Rooms come in three styles: the Dwellings, a Tree House and a Villa, all with air conditioning.
The heart of the place is its treatment center. There are 10 Ayurveda treatment rooms, two rooms set aside for Shirodhara (the warm oil poured over the forehead), two steam rooms and four herbal bath spaces. That's a serious setup for a small retreat, and it tells you the focus here is real Ayurveda, not a spa menu with a few Ayurvedic names.
The 2025 World Spa Awards named Amuna Sri Lanka's Best Wellness Retreat.
The programs
Every Ayurveda stay starts with a detailed consultation with the resident Ayurvedic doctor, who shapes your treatments, herbs and meals around your body type and goals. Amuna's named programs include:
- Svastha for burnout and low energy
- Smriti for stress, sleep and a calmer mind
- Vishuddhi, a purification and detox program
- Sthula Harini for weight management and digestion
- Rasayani for rejuvenation
- Jeewani, a program for women focused on hormonal balance, menstrual issues and menopause
- Santarpana, a two-phase program of cleansing followed by nourishment
Panchakarma, the classic Ayurvedic detox, is available. The retreat says common reasons guests come include digestive problems, stress and anxiety, arthritis, skin conditions and hormonal imbalance.
If you don't want medical treatment or herbal prescriptions, there's a wellness-only option built around yoga, meditation, healthy meals, nature walks and therapies. Amuna also runs group and corporate retreats and welcomes outside teachers who want to host their own.
Food
Meals are mostly vegetarian, with vegan and some non-vegetarian choices. The kitchen uses local ingredients and traditional spices, and on treatment programs your plate is matched to your dosha and your plan, aiming to include all six Ayurvedic tastes.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
Amuna is a good fit if you have a week or two and want a genuine, doctor-led Ayurveda program in a quiet rural setting. It also works well for women looking for support around hormones or menopause, and for people who want to pair a retreat with Sri Lanka's ancient sites.
It's less suited to a quick two-night stopover if you're hoping for real results. The retreat recommends 7 to 14 days for full benefit, and around 21 days for deeper work on chronic issues. Shorter stays are fine if you just want to rest.
Getting there
Most international travelers fly into Bandaranaike International Airport near Colombo, then travel inland by road to the Sigiriya and Dambulla area. The retreat doesn't publish transfer details on its site, so contact them to arrange the trip. Nearby you'll find the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pidurangala Rock with its view of Sigiriya's Lion Rock, and Minneriya National Park, where elephants gather from August to October.
