Atmantan is a doctor-led wellness retreat on a 42-acre hillside overlooking Mulshi Lake, about 45 minutes by road from Pune in western India. It's best for people who want a structured health program, from a short detox to a two-week Ayurvedic Panchakarma, with medical guidance throughout.
What it's like
Atmantan sits on 42 acres in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, looking down over Mulshi Lake. It was founded by Sharmilee and Nikhil Kapur, and the Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), the group behind Taj, now holds a controlling stake. The center describes itself as an integrated wellness resort, and that's a fair summary: every stay is built around a doctor's consultation, diagnostics and a set of prescribed treatments.
The campus is organised into pavilions. The Wellness Pavilion holds doctor consultations, physiotherapy, the gym, the pools and the treatment rooms. The Kriya Pavilion is where doctors prescribe traditional yogic cleansing practices. The Dining Pavilion has three spaces, including a main restaurant and a detox café. There's an indoor and an outdoor salt pool, the outdoor one an infinity pool facing the lake and mountains, plus separate wet suites for men and women with steam, sauna and infrared sauna. A 3,500 square foot gym has studios for yoga, Pilates and indoor cycling, and there's an open-air amphitheatre above the lake.
There are 89 rooms, suites and villas, from garden rooms to lake-view suites with their own small therapy rooms and two private villas. The center has GOLD LEED certification and uses solar water heating.
The programs
Every program starts with a doctor's consultation on your first day, and the final plan is shaped around what they find, so the treatments listed online are a guide. Programs include consultations, diagnostics, prescribed meals, guided activities and treatments. Minimum stays include:
- Master Cleanse, a detox focused on liver cleansing, from 3 nights
- Atmantan Living, a lifestyle reset, and Spa Life, a relaxation-focused stay, from 3 nights each
- Journey Through Yoga, Holistic Health, Fitness Challenge and Restorative Physiotherapy, from 5 nights
- Weight Balance, Natural Healing for chronic and lifestyle conditions, and a Super Immunity program, from 7 nights
- Ayurveda Panchakarma, the traditional Ayurvedic cleanse, from 14 nights
Therapies draw on Ayurveda, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition, fitness and energy work. For chronic conditions, the center usually recommends two to four weeks. Herbal remedies and supplements cost extra.
Food
Everything served is vegetarian. The kitchen works on a food-as-medicine idea, using whole, seasonal ingredients, much of it from Atmantan's own organic farms, with rock salt instead of refined salt and natural sweeteners like jaggery and honey in place of white sugar. Retreat guests eat meals prescribed by their doctor, which also takes care of allergies.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
Atmantan suits people with a clear health goal, whether that's weight, detox, recovery from injury, stress or a long-awaited Panchakarma, and who like the reassurance of medical oversight. It's also a good fit for anyone wanting a serious yoga or fitness week in a quiet setting.
If you mainly want a pampering spa weekend with cocktails by the pool, this isn't the place. The structure and the vegetarian, prescribed diet are central to the experience.
Getting there
Pune International Airport is about 90 minutes away by road, and Mumbai's international airport about three and a half hours. From Pune city it's roughly 45 minutes. The road goes via Pirangut and past the Tata Dam, then over a short hill road to the resort. There's also a helipad, with helicopter transfers possible from Mumbai's Juhu aerodrome and from Pune.
