## What it's like

Huus Quell is the newest of three houses that make up the Appenzeller Huus resort in Gonten, a small village in the rolling green hills of Appenzell in northeastern Switzerland. The other two are the historic Huus Löwen 1878 and Huus Bären 1602. Quell is the spa and wellbeing house, with 30 rooms and suites, sitting at about 900 meters in the Alpstein region.

The resort leans hard into its sustainability credentials. It belongs to the Leading Hotels of the World and carries labels from the Responsible Hotels of Switzerland and ibex fairstay programs. Its own description calls Quell a place to bring body, mind and soul back together, and the setting helps: green hills and the Säntis peak on the horizon.

TIME named it one of the World's Greatest Places for 2026, and Outside included it in its 2026 wellness destinations.

## The spa

Quell Spa is the reason to come. It covers 2,200 square meters and uses spring water from the resort's own source. Inside you'll find nine pools, eight saunas and steam grottos, nature zones and a rooftop spa looking out toward the Säntis.

The treatment menu is split into three areas:

- **Wellbeing.** Massages, from short relaxing sessions to deep tissue work and hot stone treatments, including options for two.
- **Activity and nature.** Coached exercise sessions, from a quick check-in to longer personal programs.
- **Holistic health.** This is the biohacking side, with cryotherapy, hyperbaric oxygen sessions and other treatments that use heat, cold, light, movement and oxygen. The resort says the aim is to lower stress, build energy and sharpen mental focus, and each plan is tailored to you.

The hotel also offers meditation and nutrition plans. Hotel guests can use the spa from 3 p.m. on arrival until 3 p.m. on departure day, which gives you a full extra afternoon. Day spa visits are open to outside guests too, so book treatments ahead.

## Food

The kitchen at Restaurant Quell is run by Executive Chef Michael Gollenz, serving modern brasserie cooking. The Botanicum Bar mixes cocktails with local herbs and fruit, and there's a private dining room set in a wine barrel for up to 10 people. The resort says its wine cellar is the largest in Switzerland.

## Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

Huus Quell is a strong pick for people who like a polished hotel with a serious spa, and who are curious about longevity treatments without signing up for a clinic. It's also good for travelers who'd rather arrive by train than rent a car.

It's not a structured retreat with a fixed daily schedule or group classes, so if you want a guided program where every hour is planned, a dedicated retreat center may suit you better.

## Getting there

Gonten has its own train station, a one-minute walk from the hotel, so getting there by Swiss rail is easy. Zurich is the nearest major airport, and the hotel can arrange a private car transfer from there if you book at least a day ahead.
