Rancho La Puerta is a family-owned fitness resort and spa at the foot of Mount Kuchumaa in Tecate, Baja California, about an hour from San Diego. Running since 1940, it suits active adults who want a full week of classes, hiking and mostly vegetarian food.
What it's like
Rancho La Puerta has been welcoming guests since 1940, which makes it one of the oldest wellness resorts anywhere. Deborah Szekely co-founded it, and it's still owned and run by her family. The ranch sits just across the border in Tecate, Mexico, at the base of Mount Kuchumaa.
The land is big: roughly 4,000 acres, with about 40 miles of trails and 32 acres of landscaped gardens. Guests stay in casitas spread across the grounds, and about 150 people are in residence in a typical week. The climate is Mediterranean, with cool, damp winters, a long spring and hot, dry summers.
The ranch nudges you to unplug. Wi-Fi is available in a few shared lounges and some villas, and cell phones are meant to stay in your room, not in public spaces. Alcohol isn't served in the dining room, apart from a welcome reception and a Friday farewell dinner. Outside magazine profiled it in 2025 as North America's original wellness resort.
The programs
The classic stay is a week, with arrivals on Saturday. Shorter stays of three or four nights are offered at certain times, so check the calendar.
- Fitness classes. More than 40 classes run every day, from HIIT, barre, cycling, kickboxing and salsa to mat and aerial yoga, meditation, sound healing and Feldenkrais. There's a dedicated pool for water classes.
- Hiking. Guided morning hikes and nature walks head out across meadows, streams and the boulder-strewn foothills of Kuchumaa. There's also a running program.
- Racquet sports. Two tennis courts and eight pickleball courts are open through the day and evening.
- Spa and cooking. The ranch spa offers treatments you book separately, and La Cocina Que Canta, the on-site cooking school, runs hands-on classes.
- Themed weeks. Special weeks include a Family Week, when children aged seven and up are welcome.
Food
Meals follow a lacto-ovo vegetarian pattern, with seafood served about once a day. Much of the produce, plus goat cheese, comes from Tres Estrellas, the ranch's own organic farm. Breakfast and lunch are relaxed buffets with a big salad bar, and dinner is seated. The kitchen can handle vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free and allergy needs if you tell the host when you arrive.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
It's a great fit for active adults, solo travelers and friends who like a full schedule and want to move a lot, eat well and sleep early.
It's less suited to people who want nightlife, a cocktail by the pool or to stay connected all day. Children under 14 can only come during Family Week.
Getting there
Fly into San Diego International Airport. The ranch runs free scheduled buses from Terminal 2 on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and you need to book at least two weeks ahead. The trip takes about an hour and a half, crossing the border at Tecate. You can also drive yourself to the border and use the ranch's shuttle from the US side. Everyone needs a valid passport and must stop at Mexican immigration on the way in.
