# 6 Costa Rica yoga retreats on or steps from the beach

> If you want to practice yoga and be in the sea a few minutes later, Blue Osa, Ojo del Mar and Hotel Tropico Latino are right on the beach, and Pura Vida Adventures runs its surf and yoga weeks from Tropico Latino. Harmony Hotel in Nosara and Danyasa in Dominical are about two minutes' walk from the sand.

Right on the sand: Blue Osa, Ojo del Mar, Hotel Tropico Latino (and Pura Vida Adventures, based there)
Two minutes' walk: Harmony Hotel, Danyasa
Best time to go: December to April is dry season; turtles nest near Blue Osa from July to December

We first ran this list in 2015. For the 2026 update we went back through every Costa Rica retreat on our site and kept only the ones where the beach is genuinely on the doorstep.

## How we chose

Lots of Costa Rica yoga retreats say they're close to the beach and turn out to be a hillside, a shuttle ride or a steep walk away. Here, we only included places where the official site puts you either right on the sand or about two minutes' walk from it, and where yoga happens every day or is the point of the stay. We checked each one in October 2026. We've split them into two groups so you know exactly what you're getting, and the order isn't a ranking. Pura Vida Adventures is a retreat company rather than a property, but it runs its weeks from a beachfront hotel, so it earns its own spot.

## Right on the sand

### Blue Osa, Osa Peninsula

[Blue Osa](/blue-osa-yoga-sanctuary-and-spa/) sits on a private beach at Playa Tamales, just outside Puerto Jiménez, with the open-air yoga deck roughly 50 meters from the water. It's a 13-room retreat on about five acres, mostly solar powered, with a chemical-free lap pool and an eco-spa.

This is the quiet option. The Osa is one of the wildest corners of the country, sea turtles nest nearby from July to December, and humpback whales are often seen offshore. Weekly retreats run year-round, meals are included and mostly plant-based, and it also runs teacher trainings. It's especially popular with solo travelers.

### Ojo del Mar, Cabo Matapalo

[Ojo del Mar](/ojo-del-mar/) is a small family-run lodge right on the beach at Cabo Matapalo, about 12 miles south of Puerto Jiménez. Daily Vinyasa and Hatha classes happen in a hardwood shala with screened doors that open on every side, and mats and props are provided.

It's simple living: solar electricity, well water, bamboo and palm-thatch roofs and spotty Wi-Fi. You can stay in the Beach Nests right by the sand. Squirrel monkeys are regular visitors, and there's surf nearby. Note that morning classes cost extra.

### Hotel Tropico Latino, Santa Teresa

[Hotel Tropico Latino](/hotel-tropico-latino/) is a beachfront hotel in Santa Teresa with a yoga deck facing the ocean and daily classes for all levels. You don't have to be on a retreat to join. There's a spa, a pool and a restaurant that uses produce from the hotel's organic garden.

Rooms range from beachfront bungalows to glamping tents, so ask for a beachfront room if you want to hear the waves at night. It's a working hotel rather than a quiet sanctuary, which makes it a good fit for a beach holiday with yoga built in, and a practical venue for teachers bringing groups of around 10 to 43.

### Pura Vida Adventures, Santa Teresa

[Pura Vida Adventures](/pura-vida-adventures/) runs week-long, all-inclusive surf and yoga retreats from Hotel Tropico Latino, so you get the same beachfront setting with a full program on top. Yoga is daily in an outdoor oceanfront studio, surf coaching comes with video analysis and small groups, and three meals and a massage are included.

It's best known for women's weeks, including Women 50+ retreats and a mother-daughter week, with coed camps over Thanksgiving and New Year's. Complete beginners are welcome.

## About two minutes' walk from the beach

### Harmony Hotel, Nosara

[Harmony Hotel](/harmony-hotel/) is a two-minute walk along a sandy forest path from Playa Guiones. The beach is part of the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, so nothing is built on the sand itself, which is why it stays so open. Every guest gets one free yoga class a day, plus sauna and cold plunge access.

It isn't a structured retreat. It's a relaxed, family-friendly hotel where you can surf in the morning, take class at lunchtime and spend the afternoon on the beach.

### Danyasa, Dominical

[Danyasa](/danyasa-yoga-retreats-and-teacher-training/) is an adults-only eco-lodge on Dominical's main street, about two minutes from the beach, with 12 individually styled rooms and an open-air bamboo studio for drop-in classes. Visiting teachers run week-long retreats here, so check the calendar for your dates. Breakfast is included, and the rest of the surf town is a short walk away.

## Which beach suits you?

If you want wildlife and real quiet, the two Osa options, Blue Osa and Ojo del Mar, are hard to beat, though getting there takes longer. Santa Teresa and Nosara are busier surf towns with plenty of yoga, which suits anyone who wants a livelier base or plans to learn to surf. Dominical sits in between: a small surf town on the southern Pacific coast with rainforest hills behind it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which of these is most secluded?
Blue Osa and Ojo del Mar, both on the Osa Peninsula. Phone signal and Wi-Fi are patchy at both, and Blue Osa openly encourages guests to switch off.

### Can I join a yoga class without booking a retreat?
Yes at Hotel Tropico Latino, which runs daily classes on its beach deck, and at Danyasa, which offers drop-in classes. Harmony Hotel includes a class a day for guests.

### Are any of these good for learning to surf?
Pura Vida Adventures is built around surf coaching for beginners. Harmony Hotel keeps surfboards for guests, and Blue Osa lists surfing among its activities.

### Are these suitable for families?
Harmony Hotel welcomes all ages. Danyasa is adults only, and Blue Osa allows children only in limited cases.
