## What it's like

Sunshine Mountain Lodge is an old-style mountain property among ponderosa pines near Allenspark, on Colorado's Peak to Peak Highway. The buildings date from the 1940s. Before it was a retreat venue it was a restaurant, first called the Wild Rose and later the Rockledge Inn, and it turned into a mountain retreat center in the 1990s. Innkeepers Cat and Cory have looked after it since 2007, along with their dogs.

It's not a retreat center with its own schedule of classes. Think of it as a place your group rents and fills with its own program. That makes it quite different from an all-inclusive resort: you bring the teacher, the plan and often the cook, and the lodge gives you the space, the kitchen and a quiet mountain setting.

The property is made up of the main Moose Lodge and six cabins with names like Hiker's Haven, Bear's Den and Pine Cone, plus a duplex. The cabins have their own kitchens and bathrooms, living rooms and, in some, fireplaces. Around the grounds you'll find hammocks and swings, a fire pit, horseshoes and volleyball, and there's free Wi-Fi. Massage can be arranged on site.

## The programs

The lodge's group retreat page names the kinds of gatherings it hosts: yoga, meditation and wellness retreats, church groups, team building, couples retreats, and creative groups such as writers, artists, musicians, quilters and scrapbookers. It also hosts family reunions, weddings and private cabin stays, and lists its own themed Outlander Retreat.

For group retreats it takes up to 28 overnight guests, with more possible by arrangement. The meeting room is about 800 square feet and opens onto a flagstone patio, with a smart TV for presentations and plenty of folding tables and chairs. Groups get full use of the main lodge kitchen, which is set up to cook for a crowd. You can cook for yourselves, bring your own chef, or book the private chef the lodge recommends.

Sample packages on the website include three-night weekday stays, four-night weekend stays and shorter off-season weekends from October to April.

## Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It's a strong fit for yoga teachers, meditation groups, wellness coaches and workshop leaders who want a cozy mountain base they can shape around their own program. It also works for creative groups who mostly need room to spread out and a big table.

If you're a solo traveler looking to join a scheduled retreat with classes and meals laid on, this isn't the right kind of place. You'd need to find a group that has booked it, or simply rent a cabin and make your own quiet weekend.

Outdoors, the lodge points guests to Rocky Mountain National Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness for hiking and fishing in summer, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

## Getting there

The lodge is in the mountains above Lyons, about 30 to 40 minutes from Longmont, Boulder or Loveland, and just over an hour from metro Denver and Fort Collins. If you're flying in, you'll be heading for the Denver area and driving up from there; the lodge's resources page has local tips.
