The Ranch Hudson Valley is a structured fitness and hiking retreat in a historic stone mansion by a lake, less than an hour from New York City. It's best for people who want a short, demanding reset with daily hikes, classes and massage, and clean food.
What it's like
The Ranch made its name in the hills above Malibu, and the Hudson Valley location brings the same no-nonsense program to the East Coast. It's set on a secluded historic estate in the Lower Hudson Valley, under an hour from New York City. The centerpiece is a stone mansion with a landscaped courtyard, looking out over a lake, thick forest, woodland streams and mountain ridges. TIME included it in its World's Greatest Places list for 2025.
Inside, the old ballroom has been turned into a gym, and there's a heated indoor pool, an infrared sauna and hot and cold plunges. A meditation hall is set up for yoga, and meals are served in a bright dining room. There are 26 private rooms, ranging from petite deluxe rooms to junior suites, each with its own bathroom. Some rooms have two queen beds, so friends can share.
The resort runs year-round. In the warmer months, classes often move outside to the terrace or lawn, and in winter you'll still be out on the trails, sometimes in snow.
The programs
The Ranch is known for structure. You don't pick and choose much; you follow the day, and that's the point.
- Daily hikes. Every day includes a guided hike of either two or four hours through the surrounding hills.
- Fitness classes. Expect morning stretching, strength and conditioning and restorative yoga.
- Daily massage. A deep-tissue massage is included for each full day you're there.
- Recovery and learning. You get use of the sauna, cold plunge and pool, plus cooking demos, wellness talks and a body composition analysis.
Curated retreats start at three nights, shaped to fit a New York schedule, and multi-week stays allow more time with the method and extra clinical services. Private retreats are available too, and the resort hosts themed programs from time to time. Optional extras include acupuncture, reiki, hypnotherapy, facials and colon hydrotherapy.
Food
Meals and snacks are organic and plant-forward, and the kitchen leaves out alcohol, dairy, gluten and processed sugar. Portions are planned around the activity level, so come ready for a cleaner, lighter way of eating than you might be used to.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
It's a great fit if you want a hard reset with no decisions to make: lots of walking, real sweat, good sleep and food that does the thinking for you. It works well for solo travelers and friends doing it together, and the short format suits people who can't take a full week off.
It's not the place for a lazy spa break. If long hikes every day sound miserable, or you want a glass of wine with dinner, look at a gentler retreat.
Getting there
The estate is under an hour's drive from New York City. Guests arrange their own way in on arrival day, and the resort runs a shuttle back to Newark Liberty International Airport on the final morning. Driving or a car service from the city is the simplest option.
