Breitenbush Hot Springs is an off-grid, worker-owned retreat center in Oregon's Cascade forest near the town of Detroit. It's best for people who want to soak, unplug completely and join simple daily yoga and meditation, either on a personal retreat or a hosted workshop.

What it's like

Breitenbush is a hot springs retreat center beside a river in the forest of the Oregon Cascades, with Detroit as the closest town. It runs entirely off the grid. Electricity comes from a small hydroelectric plant on the river, and the buildings are heated by pumping naturally hot spring water through radiators.

The other thing that defines it is the lack of connection. There's no cell service and no Wi-Fi. Guests can pick up satellite internet only from their own vehicles, so in practice most people just switch off. Outside included it in its 2025 roundup of the most beautiful hot springs resorts in the US, and that unplugged feel is a big part of the appeal.

Breitenbush is a worker-owned cooperative, and it has a relaxed, communal atmosphere. Soaking is clothing optional, so you'll see swimsuits and bare skin, though clothes are required around the Lodge, the parking lot and the cabins. Alcohol and recreational drugs aren't allowed in the springs.

The programs

  • Personal retreats. Stay overnight and you get 24-hour access to the soaking pools and sauna, three vegetarian meals a day, Daily Well-Being sessions and the run of the grounds, including a labyrinth and the Lodge library.
  • Daily Well-Being. Free sessions for guests, such as yoga, meditation, breathwork, movement classes, sound baths, history talks and live music. The day's schedule is written up on boards in the Lodge lobby.
  • Workshops and special weekends. Many visiting teachers host retreats here each year, along with events like Quiet Weekends and Women-Only weekends. These are booked through the events catalog.
  • Day use. Day passes run from 9 am to 6 pm and include the springs, sauna and Daily Well-Being sessions, with a vegetarian lunch you can add.

Massage is available too, booked after you've reserved your stay.

Where you'll stay

There's a wide spread of options. Year-round choices include geothermally heated Grove rooms with mountain views, riverside yurts, rooms in a renovated dairy truck, a standalone room near the springs, a stone-and-wood Forest Shelter by the river and two accessible rooms in the Lodge. In summer you can also book canvas tent-cabins, platform tents or bring-your-own-tent sites in a meadow. Small campervans can park on dedicated sites without hookups.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It's ideal if you want to disconnect, soak and keep things simple. It suits solo travelers, friends and groups, and children are welcome as long as kids 12 and under are supervised. A low-gluten, egg-free and dairy-free diet is available, though cross-contamination can happen.

It's not for you if you need to stay online, want luxury hotel service or aren't comfortable around clothing-optional pools.

Getting there

Breitenbush is a drive into the Cascades, with Detroit, Oregon, as the nearest town. Between November 1 and April 1 you're asked to carry traction devices for your car, and electric vehicles can't be charged on site. The center keeps a smoke policy for wildfire season, and its rideshare page helps guests share lifts.
