Harmony Hotel is a relaxed, family-friendly hotel a two-minute walk from Playa Guiones in Nosara, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Every guest gets a free yoga class each day, plus sauna and cold plunge access, so it suits travelers who want a do-it-yourself wellness break with surf on the doorstep rather than a structured retreat program.
What it's like
Harmony Hotel sits in the Guiones part of Nosara, on the Nicoya Peninsula. The owners were surfers who met on Nosara's beaches, bought a run-down bungalow surf hotel in 2004 and reopened it in 2005 as a place built around nature and the local community. They swapped the old lawns for native plants to bring wildlife back, hired mostly local staff and made sustainability as important as comfort.
That history still shows. The rooms have no TVs, there's a lockbox in each one where you're encouraged to park your phone, and the gardens are left wild enough that a gecko or crab may wander through. From the back gate, a sandy path through coastal forest takes about two minutes to reach Playa Guiones. Because the beach is part of the protected Ostional Wildlife Refuge, there's no building along the sand itself, which keeps it feeling open and natural.
The hotel is honest that it isn't silent. Families of all ages stay here, and it can get lively during school holidays.
The programs
Harmony isn't a retreat with a set timetable. It's a hotel where wellness is built into the stay:
- Daily yoga. Each guest gets one complimentary yoga class per day. When we checked, the Harmony Yoga class ran daily at 11:00 for 75 minutes.
- Meditation. A free 30-minute session runs early on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
- Healing Centre. Massage and other therapies are available daily, with a focus on rest and recovery (the team mentions working on plenty of sore surfers).
- Sauna and cold plunge. Guests get free access to a dry sauna and cold plunge pools, plus a saltwater swimming pool.
- Surf and bikes. The hotel keeps a collection of surfboards and bikes for guests.
Food is a big part of the stay. The restaurant builds its menu around Costa Rican farm produce and the daily catch and works toward zero waste. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a garden juice bar under a thatched roof offers coffee, salads, sandwiches on house-baked bread and fresh juices. Vegetarian and gluten-free choices are on the menu.
Rooms
There are several room types. Cocos rooms sit closest to the pool and front desk, each with a private deck and outdoor shower. Bungalows are a little further out for more privacy. Palma bungalows sleep up to four and add a plunge pool, kitchenette and work desk. There's a two-bedroom suite with a large terrace, and two standalone three-bedroom villas with full kitchens for groups.
Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
It's a strong pick if you want to surf in the morning, stretch at lunchtime and spend the afternoon on a quiet beach, all on your own terms. Families do well here too: the hotel works with a local nanny service and points parents to a day camp in town.
It's less suited to anyone looking for a guided, all-day retreat program or complete silence, especially during school holidays. If you need a TV in your room, this isn't your place.
Getting there
The quickest route is a short flight on Sansa to the Nosara airstrip: under an hour from San José and about 20 minutes from Liberia. The hotel can book the flight for you and meet you on arrival. Driving from Liberia airport takes around two and a half hours, with some famously bumpy roads near the end.
The local weather has two moods. May to November is the green season, with heavy rain and thinner crowds. December to April is dry, hot and busier.
