Hotel Tropico Latino is a beachfront hotel in Santa Teresa on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula that hosts yoga, surf and wellness retreats. It's a good fit for travellers who want a relaxed beach base with daily yoga and spa time, and for teachers looking for a place to run a group retreat.

What it's like

Tropico Latino sits right on the beach in Santa Teresa, on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula. The grounds are a tropical garden shaded by old forest trees, with a swimming pool, a beachfront yoga deck and a restaurant looking out to the sea. It's a hotel first, but wellness is clearly part of its identity, and it regularly hosts visiting retreat groups.

Rooms come in several styles, from beachfront bungalows and suites to glamping tents and a one-bedroom unit. If you like to fall asleep to the sound of waves, ask for one of the beachfront options.

Food is a big part of a stay here. Shambala Restaurant & Bar uses produce from the hotel's organic garden, and the hotel describes its approach as farm to table. Breakfast is part of the amenities list, and there's room service too.

The programs

The hotel's wellness side has three main strands.

Daily yoga. There's yoga on the oceanfront deck every day, pitched as suitable for all levels. You don't need to be on a retreat to join in, though the official site doesn't publish a timetable, so ask at reception when you arrive.

Spa treatments. The treatment menu includes deep tissue massage, facials and other massage styles, with some packages using local tropical skincare products. Book ahead in busy months, and mention any health conditions or pregnancy when you do.

Traditional gatherings. The hotel also lists cacao ceremonies, a temazcal (a traditional sweat lodge), a peace pipe ceremony and a full moon women's circle.

Hosted retreats. Outside teachers and companies bring their own groups. When we checked, the calendar showed several surf and yoga weeks run by Pura Vida Adventures, including a Thanksgiving week and a New Year's week, and a Pilates retreat run by Soul Shine Pilates. Dates change each season, so look at the retreats page for the current list.

If you're a teacher thinking about leading a group, the hotel takes groups of roughly 10 to 43 people. Group packages include meals, use of the yoga studios and props, discounted surf lessons and massages, and an on-site coordinator.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits people who want a beach holiday with yoga woven in, rather than a strict program. It's also a practical choice for yoga or Pilates teachers who want a ready-made venue with meals and studios sorted.

It's less suited to anyone looking for silence or a monastic schedule. It's a working hotel with other guests coming and going. If you're after a structured, all-day retreat, book one of the hosted weeks rather than coming on your own.

Getting there

Santa Teresa is on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula. The hotel's own blog has a guide to getting around the area, including a ferry-and-road route from the mainland. It's worth reading before you plan your transfer, and the reservations team can help by phone or WhatsApp.
