There are some beautiful sea bird nesting sites on the cliffs around the island. The island offers a number of exciting, yet easy walks. And above all Clare Island, a haven from hectic city life, is the place where you will find a very special yoga retreat center, Clare Island Yoga Retreat Centre, one of those all-too-rare yoga centers run by true yogis.
Eco-friendliness
The location is beautiful and rugged with stunning views over Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. It has a sustainable outlook. You will enjoy home-cooked food. The houses/cottages for guests are beautifully designed, clean and cozy. All the cottages has fully furnished kitchen and bathrooms. To ensure your comfort there are comfy beds. Located on the northeastern end of the island, the centre is set on 240 acres of land. The surrounding area is mostly mountain land. Sheep and horses graze here every day. The area includes a 10 acre native woodland. There is a number of organic gardens which supply food and fruits for the centre. The centre is 100% eco-friendly.
They have been working hard to make this place as environmentally friendly as possible. They have done a lot of hard work to set this centre unobtrusively into the surroundings. For space heating they usually use wood and in compensation they have planted over 6000 trees. To minimize carbon emission, they use solar panels help heat the water. The vegetarian food is produced in either the center’s own garden or sourced locally from nearby farmers.
Accommodation
Accommodation is in a renovated time-honored island cottage which used to be the main guest house. Using sustainable and environment friendly materials, they have refurbished this traditional cottage and built an extension for additional accommodation. To make this place warm, relaxing and comfortable they used eco-friendly building materials including local woods, hemp and lime plaster.
One special feature of the centre is the communal sleeping arrangement is communal. But if you prefer more privacy, you can ask for a single room. They can arrange single room for you depending on which course is taking place. Don’t be intimidated, if single room is not available you can easily book one in a local B&B which is steps away from the centre. If you are little adventurous or on a tight budget, you can camp near the centre. In that case you need to bring your tent.
